Veronicas Market
The Verónicas Market: the main market square in Murcia
The Verónicas market is located in the Plano de San Francisco, next to the old Verónicas Convent and very close to three emblematic points of the city: the Almudí Palace, the Paseo del Malecón and the Segura Riverbed.
In this Market Square, visitors can enjoy the best products of the Region and consume them on the spot, in some of the bars that line the corners of the Market. A unique experience that takes us back to the essence of a city, that of turning every daily act into a reason to celebrate and enjoy life.
The Verónicas Market dates back to the early years of the 20th century
Since the 15th century, Murcia has had the custom of holding markets in the Arenal area, now known as Plano de San Francisco, where the current Verónicas Market is located today. This practice led to the permanent existence of a market in that place, which was equipped in 1910 with a Modernist style building designed by the architect Pedro Cerdán.
Today, it is one of the most important enclaves in the city, where hundreds of buyers meet every day in search of the best products. Just walking through its stalls is a luxury in itself.
Much more than a food market: the gastronomic classroom
Here you can find the best fish and seafood, the most select meats, a select delicatessen and spectacular salted meats, as well as fresh products from the Huera de Murcia region. The Verónicas Market also has a culinary classroom where cooking classes are organised almost daily for certain groups contacted by the Murcia City Council.
Saturdays are the busiest day, when the small canteens inside cook the products bought at the stalls. The meat and fish sellers are in the lower part and the fruit and vegetable sellers are in the upper part, which can be accessed by escalators.
A market square next to a millennium of history
Next to the Market, on its right side, you can see a section of the Wall and the Arab outer wall. Two towers are preserved in the wall, one of them almost complete, which is embedded in the Church of Verónicas. This indicates the reuse of the wall as a load-bearing pillar to build the convent. It is the only tower of the wall that is preserved today.
