The Salzillo Museum
A museum dedicated to our most universal sculptor
The Murcian sculptor Francisco Salzillo is, without a doubt, the best example of 18th century Spanish sculpture, and one of the greatest within the large cast of Spanish baroque artists dedicated to religious sculpture.
Totally different spaces merge harmoniously into a Museum with extraordinary monumental value
The museum complex combines, on the one hand, the church of Nuestro Padre Jesús, a baroque construction from the 17th century, and on the other, the avant-garde architecture of the new building dedicated to the sculptor. The visit begins in the Plaza de San Agustín, the traditional anteroom of the church and museum. Completely renovated by Yago Bonet, the architect has sought to regenerate the urban environment and highlight the representative and ceremonial character of a space that brings together processions and the departure of Salzillo's floats from the church of Jesús.
The processional floats belong to the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth, which has a very important connection with the city and whose most significant public event is the procession on Good Friday morning.
The Passion Play: One of Salzillo's Peaks
Salzillo transformed wooden and polychrome structures into lessons of emotion and feeling. Works such as The Last Supper, La Dolorosa, San Juan or The Prayer in the Garden, among others, can be admired in their original setting, the temple, a stage illustrated with beautiful 18th century mural paintings, which serve as the perfect setting for contemplating the sculptural representations
Belén de Salzillo: a work to immortalize 18th century Murcia
Salzillo's Nativity scene, through its five hundred and fifty-six figures, immortalised 18th-century Murcia. Thanks to the virtuosity and extreme quality of its execution, the spectator is immersed in the atmosphere of the period.
The physiognomies, the characters, the ways of dressing, the occupations and the great realism of their gestures and expressions come together to present the visitor with a visual spectacle that is difficult to forget.
