Romea Theatre

The Romea Theatre

In our opinion, most stunning theatre in the world for 150 years of history

The Romea Theatre is one of the most important cultural landmarks in the city and stands in the Plaza de Julián Romea, a distinguished actor from Murcia considered one of the greatest glories of national theatre.

The theatre has undergone several renovations due to the fires it suffered in the 19th century.

The building, opened in 1862 under the name of Teatro de los Infantes, was later renamed Teatro de la Soberanía Popular and finally Teatro Romea, after the actor's death. The building suffered two spectacular fires during the 19th century (1877 and 1899), leaving only the walls remaining after the last one. The reconstruction works after the fires and the important rehabilitation carried out in 1985 have meant that this monumental theatre has been inaugurated up to four times.

Of neoclassical inspiration, the monumental façade of the theatre, with its distinctive pink colour, is characterised by an eclectic style.

The busts in the upper central part represent Beethoven, Mozart and Listz and, above the windows, four medallions with reliefs of as many Murcian playwrights, thus highlighting the character of this building dedicated to the promotion of culture. Inside, the ceiling paintings stand out, by Antonio de la Torre and Inocencio Medina, which represent the coronation of Julián Romea by the muses and the offering of a coat of arms of the city to the actor and poet.

It is one of the most important theatres on the Spanish circuit.

The curtain, which was a gift from María Guerrero, represents Music, Poetry and Drama.

The Romea Theatre, one of the most important theatres on the Spanish circuit, is highly appreciated by both spectators and artists, given its beauty, comfort and extraordinary acoustics.
