The Plaza de las Flores
Flower Square
The Plaza de las Flores: the festive heart of Murcia
One of the most lively and pretty squares in the old town.
Plaza de las Flores is located in the centre of one of the main tapas and restaurant areas of the city. Also stroll through its adjacent streets and the surrounding squares of Santa Catalina and San Pedro, and have a beer accompanied by a seafood dish.
Emblematic and always busy, beautiful and busy, charismatic and fun. It is the hallmark of Murcian restoration.
In Plaza de las Flores we can enjoy a wide variety of bars and cafes, almost all with terraces facing outside, displaying a very festive atmosphere every weekend. With a gastronomic offer focused on appetizers and meals based on typical Murcian tapas, this place is the best-known reference in the city where you can enjoy a varied and quality tapas.
In the central fountain of the square you can see "The Flower Girl", a bronze sculpture by the sculptor José Fuentes Aynar, which has been part of the image of the square since 2011.
Dotted with countless pedestrian streets that are worth getting lost in
In the Plaza de las Flores there are countless pedestrian streets, all of them full of bars and tapas shops with a relaxed atmosphere. Along one of these streets, passing through the Plaza de San Pedro, we arrive at the Mercado de Verónicas, a traditional market where you can buy typical products from the garden, the sea and the mountains. Next to the Plaza de las Flores, forming part of the pedestrian complex, you will find the Plaza Santa Catalina, which shares the same character and festive atmosphere. Here you can see the Unión y el Fénix building, from the 17th century, crowned with a statue with the company's emblem, a person with their arm raised on a Phoenix bird.
One of the most charming squares in the city
Originally, the building of the Carnicería Mayor de Murcia was located there, used for selling meat. The city's florists set up their stalls around the shop, in order to be able to offer their products to meat buyers. These stalls, following tradition, are still present in the square, filling it with colour. At the end of the 19th century, the building was demolished and in 1968 the area was finally officially named Plaza de las Flores.
Today, flower stalls, shops, cafes, trees, wooden benches, street lamps and pedestrians gather around the central fountain, making it one of the most charming squares in the city.
