THE CAVE OF THE PORT

The Cueva del Puerto is located in the northwest of the Region of Murcia, on the slope of Monte de Chatres, which forms part of the mountain range of the Sierra del Puerto-Cabeza del Asno. It has not been possible to date the discovery of the cave, since it seems to have been known for at least five generations of inhabitants of the valley who traditionally intuited the relationship, later confirmed, of the cave with the aquifer and specifically with the outcrop of water from the Borbotón. Nor have any remains been found that demonstrate that it was inhabited in prehistoric times, unlike other small caves located on the slopes of this same mountain range, such as the caves of Marble and Pito in the nearby Sierra del Molino.

The total length of the surveyed galleries is 4,386 metres, with a gradient of 114 metres in depth, although it is believed that the entire Sierra del Puerto has cave areas yet to be discovered. The area that is open to tourism has a length of more than 700 metres with a gradient of approximately 50 metres in depth.

Throughout the cave, you can see different speleothems, such as: stalactites, stalagmites, columns, tube-shaped, eccentric, jellyfish, organs, curtain, chickpeas, false floors, etc.

The Cueva del Puerto is the underground cavity with the longest horizontal length in the Region of Murcia.

With more than 700 metres of length and over 9 km of galleries, this cave will surprise you from start to finish. The figures take up to 100 years to grow!

Throughout the tour, synchronized narration and lighting with LED technology will make the visit even more exciting.

Rice is the product par excellence of Calasparra, and, together with rice from the Ebro Delta and Valencia, they are the only three Spanish rice varieties with a designation of origin.
