Sanctuary of La Fuensanta
Sanctuary of La Fuensanta: art and nature, at the top of the city
A sanctuary where you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the city and the orchard. The temple houses the image of the patron saint of the city.
Its name comes from the spring that flowed at its feet and to whose waters the faithful people attributed healing properties.
The sanctuary is a traditional Murcian baroque temple, consisting of three naves; a larger central one and two side naves with chapels. The doorway (1705), the work of Toribio Martínez de la Vega, has two towers and a semicircular arched door, crowned by two angels holding the coat of arms of the Cathedral Chapter -whose initiative was behind the construction of the temple- and a central niche with the image of the Virgin of Fuensanta, a carving by Jaime Bort, flanked by Saint Patrick and Saint Fulgencio.
The reliefs and frescoes of the dome
Inside there are some splendid reliefs and sculptures by the artist González Moreno. The paintings and murals in the dome and the choir are the work of the painter Pedro Flores. The former depicts the people and history of Murcia in a pilgrimage to the Virgin, with Alfonso X, the Count of Floridablanca, Cardinal Belluga, Francisco Salzillo and other illustrious figures from Murcian history. The choir depicts the solemn moment of the coronation of the Virgin of Fuensanta on the Puente Viejo.
The Fuensanta sanctuary is surrounded by a natural environment of singular beauty.
The temple is located in the El Valle y Carrascoy Regional Park, a protected natural area that dominates the entire Murcian plain. In addition, around the Sanctuary we find other points of interest such as the so-called Holy Fountain in Renaissance style, the Casa del Cabildo or del Sacristán, in neo-Arabic style, or the monastery of the Benedictine nuns - connected to the Sanctuary by an arch.
El Valle and Carrascoy Regional Park, a garden of hermitages and monasteries
Near the Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Fuensanta are the Hermitage and Monastery of La Luz (whose first settlers were anchorites), the Hermitage and Visitors Centre of San Antonio el Pobre and the Franciscan Convent of Santa Catalina del Monte, all of them places of worship that are worth visiting.
Also worth visiting is the Luz Visitors Centre , located just one kilometre away from the Fuensanta Sanctuary.
