Ancient Origins of the Roman Theatre
The Roman Theatre in Cartagena was built during the reign of Emperor Augustus in the 1st century BC. It was originally constructed as part of a larger entertainment complex, which included a forum, public baths, and temples. The theatre was a magnificent structure, capable of seating up to 6,000 people, and it quickly became a centrepiece of cultural life in the Roman city of Carthago Nova (now Cartagena).
Rediscovery and Restoration of the Theatre
The Roman Theatre was buried and forgotten for centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire. It wasn't until the 18th century that it was rediscovered, and it wasn't until the 1980s that a comprehensive restoration project was undertaken. Today, visitors to the theatre can marvel at the incredible work that went into restoring this ancient masterpiece to its former glory.
The Roman Theatre Today
The Roman Theatre is more than just a historical landmark; it is also a thriving cultural centre. In addition to hosting concerts, plays, and other performances, the theatre is also home to the Cartagena Archaeological Museum. Visitors can explore the museum's collection of Roman artefacts, including mosaics, sculptures, and pottery, which provide insight into the daily lives of the ancient Romans who once called this area home.
Torres Park Auditorium
The Torres Park Auditorium is an open air cinema and concert venue located just above the Roman theatre, striking contrast of ancient and modern. The views from here are stunning, and there is a viewing platform above the Torres Park Auditorium, which is part of the Conception Castle above.
